The Fire Service raced to the rescue of two residents of Old Nicosia in the early hours Friday after a blaze broke out in their block of flats.
Four fire trucks rushed to Aischylou Street at around 1.10am and, as well as putting out the flames, rescued the elderly resident of the flat where the fire broke out and the person’s immediate neighbor, who has mobility problems.
A couch and television set were destroyed in the fire, the cause of which will be determined on Friday. Damage was also caused to the flat’s paintwork.
Fire Service Director Marcos Trangolas earlier this week said the Service had, between January 1 and August 29 this year, saved 1,284 lives.
