Fire in Dherynia buffer zone

A fire broke out in the buffer zone between Dherynia and Famagusta in area controlled by the UN on Thursday.

Firefighting forces on both sides of the divide and the UN forces have been alerted.

The fire is located near the Ayia Marina chapel and was heading towards the area of Kappari in Paralimni.

According to UN sources, the fire has been put under control and there is no reason to be concerned.

Andreas Kettis, the Fire Department’s representative told The Cyprus Weekly that they are on the alert and if necessary they are ready to provide assistance.

“For us to intervene, the UN would have to insure that our forces will be operating under safe conditions,” said Kettis who was referring to the fact that there might be mines in the buffer zone.

According to first indications the fire had started from the north of Cyprus and moved towards the buffer zone.

There are no reports of the fire threatening residential areas or livestock.
