Police say an elderly woman in Nicosia has been left with serious head injuries after being hit by a car being driven by a motorist four times the legal alcohol limit.
The incident occurred in Lakatamia at 6.50pm on Wednesday as the 76-year-old was attempting to cross the road.
The 51-year-old driver of the car underwent a breathalyser test which showed 93 micrograms of alcohol per 100 millilitres of breath (µg/100ml) – a reading well over the maximum legal limit of 22 µg/100ml.
A subsequent second test put the number at 75µg/100ml, still well over the limit.
He was arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol. He will appear in court at a later date.
The injured woman was rushed by ambulance to Nicosia General Hospital where she still remains under observation.
