Draw sets European challenge for Cypriot teams

APOEL Nicosia is set to meet Slavia Prague in the Champions League playoffs at Nicosia’s GSP Stadium on August 15 with the replay on August 23 in Prague.

The playoff draw was held on Friday in Nyon, Switzerland.

APOEL reached the playoffs after beating Romanian side FC Viitorul 4-0 (4-1 aggregate) on Wednesday.

Slavia Prague reached the playoffs after stopping Belarusian FC BATE Borisov on August 2.

Another two Cypriot teams, Apollon Limassol and AEK taking part in the Europa League playoffs found out who they were set to meet in the first stage of the play-offs in a similar draw in Nyon on Friday.

Apollon is set to meet Denmark’s FC Midt Jylland and AEK is set to play Czech team Viktoria Plzen.

Ties will be played on 17 and 24 August.

The 22 Europa League playoff winners advance to the group stage, where they will join 16 automatic entrants and ten teams transferring from the UEFA Champions League play-offs. The group stage draw is on Friday 25 August.
