Doxa thrash Ethnikos to avoid relegation

Doxa Katokopia pulled off another great escape on the weekend after thrashing Ethnikos Achnas 4-0 to ensure their place in next season’s top division.

The refugee club had been five points adrift of safety in the relegation playoff group before coach Savvas Poursaitides was replaced Loucas Hadjiloucas and the side began their revival.

After managing to draw level on points with Karmiotissa with a 2-1 win in Larnaca two weeks ago, Doxa then beat Ethnikos 4-0 with goals from Tiago Gomes, Joao Leonardo and Yair Castro (2). Karmiotissa, meanwhile, lost 1-0 to Nea Salamina with Dmitar Makriev scoring a late winner.

The results saw Doxa move three points ahead of Liasos Louca’s Karmiotissa and have a superior head-to-head record against them.

It is not the first time that Doxa have staged a late comeback during the season to avoid relegation.

Karmiotissa will join AEZ and Anagennises Derynia in the second division next season.
