The Famagusta council has announced that the Dherynia beach which is situated at the end of the fenced off city of Varoshia, which is controlled by the Turkish Military, is to open for Turkish Cypriots and Turkish citizens at the beginning of August.
Speaking at a press conference held last week at the council’s office, Ismail Arter, the head of the local council announced that “the Dherynia beach will be at people’s disposal”.
However, as the beach is situated in a military area the only people who are to be allowed to access and enjoy the beach are Turkish citizens and Turkish Cypriots with an identity card issued by authorities in the north of Cyprus. Entry to the beach area will be allowed upon exhibiting relevant documentation.
This has brought about heated reactions from locals and NGOs.
