Cyprus’ national under-21 side fell to a 4-1 defeat on Tuesday at the hands of Sweden after previously winning their opening UEFA European Under-21 Championship qualifying game against Malta.
Nicos Andronicou’s side had gotten off to a nightmare start at the Falkenberg Arena with Carlos Strandberg scoring two quick-fire goals in the opening five minutes. The same player added a third for his hat-trick on 38 minutes before Erdal Rakip added a late fourth.
AEL striker Marios Elia scored a consolation goal for Cyprus deep into stoppage time.
Cyprus gotten their campaign off to a winning start after Theodoros Josephides scored in stoppage time as the island beat Malta 2-1 in Larnaca.
Cyprus’ next game is next month against Turkey at the AEK Arena.
