Organ donation in Cyprus is amongst the lowest in the world according the Cyprus Kidney Association (CKA) which claims it has been a year since the last kidney transplant in Cyprus.
“The last kidney transplant in Cyprus was in April 2016,” the CKA announced stressing that the only hope for many patients ever leading a normal life again would be through receiving a donor kidney.
CKA has also warned of the impeding collapse of the dialysis centres as the number of patients requiring blood dialysis is continuously on the rise due to the lack of donors.
The CKA has called for the relevant authorities to intensify efforts in order to inform and raise public awareness regarding organ donation.
In the meantime, the CKA has thrown its support behind a recent proposed bill allowing newly issued driving licenses to also state whether it’s holder wishes to be an organ donor or not.
