Cyprus expected to feature in new James Bond film

The writers of the new James Bond film have arrived in Cyprus as they scout for locations for the 25th blockbuster in the franchise.

Screenwriters Neal Purvis and Robert Wade signed up to write the new, as-yet-untitled, 007 film last month and have already begun working on a script that could -for the first time – see Cyprus land a major role in the plot.

The pair have worked as co-writers on every movie in the spy franchise since 1999’s The World is Not Enough and will again be on hand for the new Bond film although lead actor Daniel Craig was “still deciding whether he will do it” according to showbiz sources in the UK.

One thing for sure is that a new director is being sought following the decision by Sam Mendes to quit the franchise.

Both Purvis and Wade arrived in Cyprus last week and began scouting for locations across the island – both in the south and north of the island.

“We have been escorting a team from Eon Productions (the British film production company known for producing the Bond films) along with Neil and Rob across the island,” commented Antonis Chadjipieris – who works for Orange Grove Video Productions in Cyprus, the company commissioned to help with location scouting on the island.

“At the moment, they are currently scouting for locations across the world and Cyprus is certainly a place of interest for them. It is no secret that a new Bond film is in the works and it appears that Cyprus could very well be written into the script although it is still far too early to say anything for sure.”

When asked about which locations appealed to them, Chadjipieris replied, “They were especially impressed by some of the areas in and around the buffer zone although I am not sure if they will get permission to shoot there.”

“They also loved Cape Greco and the ghost town of Varosha but, again, there could be complications with getting permission to enter that area. They were also keen to find out when the new Eleftheria Square in Nicosia would be ready.”

If the 49-year-old Craig, who has now played Bond for more than a decade, decided to quit then a huge headhunt for the new 007 would ensue. Earlier this year, Poldark star Aidan Turner had been tipped to don the Bond tuxedo while other bookies place Tom Hardy and Michael Fassbender as the frontrunners.

Other actors that have been linked with the new Bond role include Toby Kebbell, Tom Hiddleston and Idris Elba – who would become the first black James Bond if he gets the nod. The previous James Bond film saw Craig battle it out against Christoph Waltz who at the end of the film unveils himself to be his arch nemesis ‘Ernst Stavro Blofeld’.

It is unclear if Waltz will reprise his role in the new film although Ralph Fiennes (M), Naomie Harris (Miss Moneypenny) and Ben Wishaw (Q) are expected to return.
