Cypriot football boss slams Martasides ban

Cyprus Football Association (CFA) boss Costakis Koutsokoumnis has described the doping ban surrounding local weightlifter Antonis Martasides as “embarrassing” after the athlete travelled to Rio only to then be told that he had tested positive for a banned substance.

Martasides had arrived in Rio on the eve of the Games only to be informed by the Cyprus Anti-Doping Authority (CyADA) that he had failed a drug test.

Koutsokoumnis took to Facebook to voice his frustration over the handling of the matter with the athlete testing positive during a test on July 25 in Athens.

“A really embarrassing thing for Cyprus! Why do they not check them before they make the trip in advance?”

Martasides – who was set to compete in the men’s 85kg weightlifting category – had in the past competed for Greece before gaining Cypriot citizenship.
