Larnaca’s popular Finikoudes area will see the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games Qualifications for Beach Volleyball play out next weekend.
Organisers the Cyprus Volleyball Federation and City of Larnaca are looking forward to fierce competition.
Beach volleyball is a team sport played by two teams of two players on a sand court divided by a net. It has been an Olympic discipline since the 1996 Games.
Of those who are gearing up to do battle, one Scottish duo is looking to make history in Larnaca next weekend.
Mel Coutts, alongside partner, Lynne Beattie, will attempt to secure a place at the 2018 Games – a bid which, if successful, will make the pair Scotland’s first representatives in Beach Volleyball at the Commonwealth Games.
“We’ve certainly both played in big games before where there’s a lot at stake although actually, nothing quite as big as this,” admitted the 45-year-old.
For those who qualify at the Finikoudes clashes, next year’s April 4-15 event will play out Down Under at the Coolangatta beachfront, drawing thousands of the Games’ visitors.
