The Turkish Cypriot assembly passed the decision early Tuesday morning for the establishment of a ‘Youth and Sports Coordination Office’.
Despite Turkish Cypriot leader Mustafa Akinci’s call for a postponement of the vote, the decision was carried by 27 votes to 17.
Throughout the marathon debate, Turkish Cypriots had gathered outside the assembly to demonstrate against the establishment of the ‘Office’ that would allow Turkey to control sporting and cultural events in the north.
Akinci who had spoken to assembly president Sibel Siber before the debate expressed the opinion that at a time when unity was paramount, divisive debates were of no constructive use.
Turkish Cypriots feel that the creation of the ‘Coordinating Office’ will impose Turkish policies for the creation of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s dream of a ‘Muslim youth’ through a Turkish state institution.
