A Bangladeshi worker, Idris Dhali lost his life in a tragic work accident in Ayios Theodoros (Cayirova), Famagusta when he fell into a cement mixing truck.
Dhali fell into the truck around 18:45 on Sunday and was torn to pieces. He was later by his colleagues who had been looking for him.
Dhali’s colleagues had emptied the truck once they suspected what happened.
Turkish Cypriot police authorities are investigating the case while the operator of the truck has been remanded in custody for three days.
According to the Turkish Cypriot authorities, there are two covers on the truck with sensors which were open at the time of the accident.
A spokesman for the authorities told reporters that they are looking into why a signal indicating that the covers were open was not sent to the handler as it should have.
Turkish Cypriot Newspaper Yeniduzen on Monday said that 83 work-related accidents took place in 2016 resulting in seven deaths.
It also recalled the words of the head of the Labour office Ersan Saner who just last month stated that: “If we were to conduct a serious inspection, we would have to close down all of the construction sites in the north as of tomorrow”.
