Ayia Napa to go football crazy

A total of 334 teams from Cyprus and 19 other countries are set to home in on Ayia Napa for an international football tournament next month.

The Ayia Napa Tournament 2017 is one of the biggest youth tournaments in Europe and will take place between April 8 and 12 in the popular coastal resort on the island.

Following intense efforts from SoccerWorldCyprus – the event organisers – and the Cyprus Tourism Organisation (CTO), this year’s tournament has grown in international reputation.

Ten teams competed in 2016, a number that will be surpassed in 2017, since nineteen teams from seven different academies have confirmed their participation.

Youth players from Great Britain, Poland, Romania, Lebanon and Jordan will grace the pitches of Ayia Napa, the grounds that host the prestigious tournament.

“More than 500 people will travel to Cyprus including footballers, coaches, escorts and parents – who will combine their trip with a week of vacations,” said Christos Constantinou who is Manager of SoccerWorldCyprus.

“If we also take into consideration the referees, volunteers and scouts coming from abroad, the arrivals will easily be over 500. With an average of five nights stays each, Ayia Napa will benefit with 2,500 to 3,000 hotel bookings from visitors just for the tournament.”

“Also, thousands more will fill up the hotels in the area, as parents, coaches and footballers from various towns of Cyprus will choose to stay in Ayia Napa. A total of five thousand footballers, aged 6-16 years old, will compete in the event”.

A total of 334 teams in ten different age categories will take part in the tournament.

The number of participants has set a new record, breaking the number of 320 teams of 2016 and 297 from 2015. A total of 82 groups of four or five teams have been drawn. More than 500 games will take place during the group stage, with all matches played at the Municipal Stadium of Ayia Napa and the adjacent fifteen full sized and natural grass pitches.
