Archangel Michael Hospice call to Paphos singers

By Lucie Robson

The Archangel Michael Hospice is holding a unique fundraising event that will see a large group of singers joining musical forces in order to raise much-needed cash for the palliative care facility.

‘One Day, One Song’ is taking place on May 21 at the Paphos harbour in front of what is expected to be a large audience made of locals and tourists.

The idea of the event is to encourage people of all singing abilities to come together to learn one song for the performance. Rehearsals have just started but hospice General Manager Mona Skordi told The Cyprus Weekly that there is still time for more singers to join the group.

“The song we are performing is a secret right now,” Skordi said. “It’s in English and I can say that it’s a happy, lively song.”

Participating singers will pay €5 which all goes into the facility coffers.

This is the second year that the Archangel Michael Hospice is putting on ‘One Day, One Song’.

Last year Skordi said that around 80 singers took part in the event.

“We simply perform one song and collect money from the audience. We also produced a CD and video which were sold to raise money.”

Currently, rehearsals are taking place every 10 days to two weeks at the hospice. As the performance date approaches, they will become more intensive.

The Archangel Michael Hospice provides a high standard of palliative and respite care to those in need, regardless of nationality, race, religion or the nature of the illness.

“The care is provided free-of-charge and we rely on donations, legacies and fundraising events as well as our charity shop to maintain this vital service,” said Skordi.

There are three hospice facilities around Cyprus, including Friends’ in Paphos. The Archangel Michael Hospice offers facilities for every age group, from youngsters suffering from life-altering medical conditions to the geriatric age group.

The purpose-built building has nine spacious, fully-equipped private rooms and full-time, fully-trained staff registered with the Ministry of Health.

Traditional as well as complementary therapies are available for patients, while a comfortable lounge, cafeteria, roof garden and terrace provide relaxation areas for relatives.

Annual running costs are about €300,000 for the €2million state-of-the-art building which opened in 2015.
