Apollon were the big winners in the Limassol derby on Saturday after goals from Arkadiusz Piech and Fotis Papoulis inflicted a 2-0 defeat on hated rivals AEL.
The defeat, meanwhile, allowed AEK Larnaca to move temporarily top – at least until Sunday – after an early Ivan Trickovski strike saw them beat Anorthosis 1-0 in Saturday’s late kickoff.
Pambos Christodoulou’s AEL had been joint top along with APOEL – who are in action at home to Aris Limassol on Sunday – but Apollon have been a rejuvenated side since the exit of coach Pedro Emanuel with caretaker manager Sofronis Avgoustis having seemingly found a winning formula at this season’s Cyprus Coca-Cola Cup holders.
Two former AEL players had linked up to score the opening goal. Piech had put Apollon in front when he collected an Esteban Sachetti pass and beat Romo with a powerful strike.
Unsurprisingly, the game was a heated affair which also saw Marco Airosa pick up a red card and the contest was over in stoppage time when Romo brought down Piech and Papoulis scored the penalty.
The win saw Apollon cut the lead from the top – and indeed AEL – to just three points.
In the other game on Saturday, Doxa passed up a string of chances but dropped two points at home to bottom side Anagennises Dherynia in Nicosia.
