APOEL looking to swoop in for Walsall’s Makris

Cypriot champions APOEL are eyeing a move for Cyprus international winger Andreas Makris – who is currently at English League One side Walsall.

Markis, 21, moved to Walsall last season from Anorthosis Famagusta for a fee of €300,000 and made 32 appearances and scored one goal. APOEL are looking to strengthen their side under new boss Mario Been as they prepare to make yet another push in the Champions League this summer.

According to media reports on Tuesday, APOEL are gearing up a transfer move for Makris.

Paphos-born Makris – who made an impact after coming on as a late substitute to help Cyprus clinch a slender 2-1 win against Gibraltar last week – is seen as the ideal replacement to help bolster the wing positions with Greece international Giannis Gianniotas having returned to parent club Olympiacos while Cypriots Stathis Aloneftis and George Efrem had struggled last season with various injuries.

Cyprus’ only other winger is Brazilian Vander who made mostly substitute appearances last season under previous boss Thomas Christiansen.

APOEL will get the new season underway in the second qualifying round of the Champions League and will be seeking to book their place in the group stages of the competition for the fourth time.

Last season, Jon Whitney’s Walsall finished 14th in the 24-team division.
