APOEL move closer towards retaining their crown

APOEL was the big winner this weekend after Thomas Christiansen’s men secured a 4-1 win over AEL to move four points ahead of second place AEK Larnaca.

Goals from Vander, Lorenzo Ebecilio and a second half brace from Pieros Sotiriou means APOEL remain on course for a record-equalling fifth consecutive league title. A win over AEK this coming Sunday will mathematically crown the Nicosia club champions.

AEK are still in the hunt for the title after Acoran scored the only goal in their win over third place Apollon at the AEK Arena. They will now need to beat APOEL in Nicosia to move within a point of the summit.

Anorthosis bounced back from a recent 6-0 drubbing by Apollon in the Cyprus Coca-Cola Cup by beating Omonia 4-3 and denting the Nicosia club’s hopes of European football in the summer.

In other games, Doxa’s hopes of staying up were dashed after they lost 1-0 at home to Aris and will now slug it out with Karmiotissa to avoid the drop.
