Alki Oroklini’s Chafik Tigroudja scored the first goal of the 2017-2018 CYTA Championship season on Saturday after the French midfielder scored the winner in a 1-0 famous victory over Ethnikos Achnas.
Alki – who were previously Alki Larnaca before going into liquidation and re-emerging as Alki Oroklini – went joint top of the standings with AEL who had Ismail Sassi to thank for his injury time winner in the derby thriller against Aris.
But it was at the Dasaki Stadium where the big shock came as Tigroudja beat Ethnikos keeper Martin Bogatinov with a thumping effort from outside the area on 74 minutes.
- New Cypriot season gets underway on Saturday
- Mixed fortunes for Apollon and AEK
- APOEL sink Slavia in Champions League first leg
Alki had dominated the chances against an Ethnikos side that were hit with a transfer embargo by FIFA in the summer.
AEL keeper Vozinha had earlier saved a penalty that had been taken from Banel Nicolita.
Three of the games on the opening day of the season have been postponed because APOEL, Apollon and AEK Larnaca are all in European action. The postponed games are: Ermis-APOEL, Omonia-AEK and Paphos FC-Apollon.
APOEL clinched the league title last season, while Apollon Limassol lifted the Cyprus Coca-Cola Cup after beating APOEL 1-0 in the final.
This year’s Cypriot Super Cup was again won by Apollon, who once again managed to beat APOEL in the final at the Antonis Papadopoulos Stadium in Larnaca.
This year’s championship will see three teams relegated and only one team promoted from the second division because the 2018-2019 season will only feature 12 teams in the top division.
On Sunday, Nea Salamina will host Anorthosis in the Famagusta derby while in the Monday kick-off, Olympiakos Nicosia face Doxa Katokopia at the Makarios Stadium in Nicosia.
