Airport security questions after ‘drug smuggler’ escape

Security officials at the main airport in the north have been left red-faced after a man who was allegedly caught with drugs in suitcase managed to run off and is still at large.

The incident occurred over the weekend with Turkish Cypriot media on Tuesday referring to the incident as a ‘debacle’ and ‘a farce’.

According to reports, a Nigerian student had flown into Ercan (Tymbou) Airport from Turkey but complained to customs officers and ground staff that he could not find two of his suitcases. Customs officers eventually found his luggage but when they proceeded to check them, the man ran off.

Officers later discovered 12 packages amounting to six kilos of cannabis in the suitcases.

Eyewitnesses say the Nigerian man – whose name has not been disclosed – had managed to escape the airport seemingly without a struggle as there was reportedly no security present.

This in turn had prompted media outlets in the north to question security at the airport.

Turkish Cypriot police are currently on the lookout for the man.
