A four-year-old girl was attacked by an Akita (a large breed of dog) at 7.30am on Monday.
The dog, which was tied up outside a house in Xylophagou, attacked the girl while being walked to nursery school by her father.
The girl’s father managed to free her from the dog, and took her to the Famagusta General Hospital where doctors treated her for a wound on her abdomen and was later transferred to Makarios Hospital in Nicosia for further examinations and treatment.
Police and veterinary officials arrived on the scene to conduct investigations.
The dog’s owner, on her own initiative, took the dog to a private vet and had it put down. She also made statements to the police and was released without being charged.
Police in Xylofagou are continuing their investigation.
Animal Party leader, Kyriacos Kyriacou, said that the party would be looking into the circumstances under the dog was euthanized. According to Kyriacou, Animal Services must first investigate any case of animal aggression before passing authorisation, if deemed necessary, for any animal to be put down.
